Cavities can hide in your teeth.
Locating hidden decay before it destroys tooth structure is a major goal for modern dentistry. The widespread use of fluoride supplements in dental materials, toothpastes and drinking water has made surfaces harder and more resistant to decay. However, diagnosing cavities beneath the hard surfaces is more challenging because the disease process can start through microscopic defects in the hard surface enamel and can readily spread into the softer tooth structure beneath the surface.
X-rays and probing with an explorer are limited in detecting sub surface decay, particularly when the cavity is in its early stages.Fortunately, the new DIAGNODENT is a major breakthrough that allows the dentist and hygienist to locate hidden decay, and with treatment stop the spread of disease before it destroys the tooth from within.

Oral HPV and Oral Cancer : Are you at Risk?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common virus groups in the world. There are many different types of HPV, and the health risk varies depending upon the type of virus. While some types of HPV are low-risk and may cause skin lesions such as warts, there are other HPV types that are classified as high-risk. These high-risk HPV types may cause an HPV infection that may lead to cancer. For example, medical research shows that these same high-risk tyes are linked to approximately 90% of cervical cancers. Similarly, recent studies show that these same high-risk types cause cancers of the mouth, tongue, tonsils and throat areas. Along with excessive smoking and alcohol consumption, specific types of oral HPV are now considered to be a separate and serious risk factor for developing cancer in the head and neck region.

HPV transmission of the most common types can be quite simple. With just close contact between people, the infection can be spread. These types of HPV are considered to be low-risk. However, the more serious types pf HPV (high-risk group) that may lead to cervical cancer or oral cancer are known to be sexually transmitted. Both males and females are at risk when intimate contact is made with HPV-infected individuals. Individuals at greatest risk are those that are in intimate relationships with HPV-infected partners.

Early oral HPV infections do not typically cause any clinical signs or symptoms; thus a visual exam would not detect people that may already have an infection caused by HPV. Today, however, a simple test called OraRisk HPV is available from your dental professional who can perform this test as part of your routine oral exam. You will be asked to "swish and gargle" a sterile saline solution for 30 seconds. You will then empty the saline from your mouth into a small coded container that will be sent to OralDNA Labs for processing. The results will be sent to your dentist and they will contact you to discuss them.

There is more to a dental checkup than a routine cleaning

Research shows a link between gum disease and your overall health. Studies indicate periodontal (gum) disease may increase your risk for a variety of health concerns:
*Diabetes
*Cardiovascular Disease
*Stroke
*Respiratory Diseases
*Pre-term and low birth weight babies

Periodontal disease is caused by a bacterial infection and your body's response to that infection. Other factors that put you at risk include:

*Family History
*Medications
*Person to person transmission
*Smoking
*Clenching/grinding
*Stress
*Poor Oral Hygiene
* Diabetes
*Hormones

Good oral health and good overall health go hand-in-hand according to the Surgeon General. It is vital that you care for your gums on a daily basis and see your dental professional regularly.

VELscope ~ the oral cancer screening system

Oral cancer is one of the few types of cancer that haven't experienced a significantly reduced mortality rate in the past 30 years. In fact, the number of North Americans developing oral cancer is three times the number who develop cervical cancer. Sadly, one North American dies of oral cancer every hour of every day.

The problem: Oral cancer is discovered in late stages about 70% of the time, and often that is simply too late.

Oral cancer has traditionally been associated with tobacco usage and it's true that the majority of oral cancer victims smoke or use chewing tobacco, consume alcohol and are over 40. But the group experiencing the highest growth rate of oral cancer incidence does not fit this traditional "at risk" profile. More and more, oral cancer is striking younger people who don't use tobacco or abuse alcohol.

In many cases, the cause appears to be one of two strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV-16 or HPV-18) that can be contracted during sexual intercourse and especially oral sex.

As a result, health care experts recommend annual oral cancer screenings for all adults ages 18 and older. If you smoke or use tobacco, screenings are recommended every six months.

Our practice has purchased a state-of-the-art device called the VELscope oral cancer screening system. We can use this device to literally see beneath the surface to detect potentially dangerous growths we might have otherwise missed.

In most cases, the VELscope exam will reveal nothing of concern and take only a few minutes as part of a regular hygiene check-up. It involves no pain and is completely safe. We think you will find this additional cost for this exam to be very reasonable, and it might be that the cost will be covered by your insurance.

We think that you'll appreciate the peace-of-mind this screening can provide.

Come join us at our Diva party where we will reveal our Diva's new look.It will be held Saturday August 28th at Gwinnett Marriott in Duluth off Pleasant Hill road. from 10-11am and it's put on by Gwinnett Magazine. Our Diva's will be showing off their finished looks with: Smiles by Suwanee Dental Care,Eyewear by Sugarloaf Eye Care,Clothes by Ambiance Interiors,LAb work donated by JB Advanced Ceramics,Skin by The Caudle Center for Skin Care; Cheney Davis,Implants donated by Biomet 3i and Hair and make up by Revival Salon.Come join the fun!
