Excess Occlusal Forces ~ T-Scan

All known public research on articulating paper consistently shows that articulating paper marks do not predictably measure the force or time-sequence of occlusal contacts accurately. Today we need a diagnostic device that can realiably determine occlusal force concentrations and contact time prematurities.

The T-Scan system is the only diagnostic device on the market that measures occlusal contact force and occlusal contact sequence. Objective data sets T-Scan apart from traditional occlusal indicators. The invaluable information it provides helps to easily diagnose and assess the balance of a patient's bite. The T-Scan illustrates the forces from first contact through closure, allowing the dentist to prevent general occlusal problems such as pain, gum disease, broken restorations, tooth loss, headaches and TMJ disorder.

The T-Scan system was recently selected by the Pride Institute for the "Best of Class" technology award in the diagnostic category. The T-Scan has proven to be so useful and accurate that many of the leading dental institutes are incorporating the system into their curriculum.

Milk and Weight Loss

The high levels of Calcium and Vitamin D found in milk may help people who are dieting lose more weight. More than 300 participants were examined who were overweight or at risk of becoming overweight over a period of 2 years. The study results showed that after adjusting for age, gender, Body Mass Index, and total fat intake, participants with higher intake of milk-based calcium and serum vitamin D (about 12 oz per day) experienced greater weight loss than those who consumed a half-glass of milk per day. However, the role of dairy products in weight loss is not well understood and more research is needed.

Estimates of Periodontal Disease Under-Reported

Differences between the types of testing used to detect periodontal diseases in the United States may have caused an under-reporting of the diseases' prevalence by as much as 50% of actual figures. Partial-mouth periodontal examinations have been used to establish previous estimates. A new study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, shifted testing methods to a full-mouth comprehensive periodontal examination, to determine prevalence rates.

An epidemiologist at the CDC says the inaccuracy created by previous testing has "signifcant" implications for public health. In light of these findings, understanding the relationships between periodontal disease and other systemic diseases in the adult US population is more crucial than ever.

This new study demonstrates that the scope of periodontal diseases is significantly larger than what had been previously reported. Citing the relationship between periodontal diseases and systemic health, the prevalence of periodontal disease among Americans carries great implications for overall health of individuals, and is therefore a significant public health problem. An annual comprehensive periodontal evaluation should be a part of the preventive measures used to maintain oral health.

periodontal disease and pregnancy

Did you know there has been research linking periodontal disease to preterm births? The bacterias involved in periodontal disease cause inflammation which causes the body to release prostraglandins . These prostraglandins are released into the blood stream and cross the placenta which can increase the risk of preterm labor. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant make sure you visit your dentist for your check ups to ensure proper periodontal health and a good start for your baby.

Super Sleuthing for Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease is caused by a bacterial infection. It strikes 3 out of 4 adults and accounts for twice as much tooth loss as dental decay. Yet it usually remains "invisible" and "painless" until a substantial amount of the gum and tooth supporting bone have been destroyed.

That is why you will notice a lot of "snooping" for periodontal disease these days. We take time to measure the tiny crevices (pockets)between your teeth and gums because the subtle changes in the depth of these areas can warn us that something is going wrong.

Some of the warning signs of Periodontal Disease include:
*gums that bleed when you brush
*red, swollen or tender gums
*gums that have receded from teeth
*pus between teeth and gums when gums are pressed
*loose or separating permanent teeth
*a change in your bite
*changes in the fit of partial dentures
*persistent bad breath

Homecare is the most critical part of prevention of Periodontal Disease. Effective toothbrushing using small circular strokes aimed towards the gumline is key. This needs to be done several times per day to be thorough. Dental flossing goes hand-in-hand with the toothbrushing. Flossing needs to be done at least once per day to effectively remove the bacteria in between your teeth and gums.

Prevention of Periodontal Disease begins with good brushing and flossing. It is important to keep your smile healthy and to help to prevent little problems from becoming big ones, see your dentist regularly for dental checkups and cleanings.

Chewing Gum Prevents Cavities

Those four out of five dentists were correct. Chewing gum helps saliva to flow and wash away bacteria that cause decay. Sugar-free gum with xylitol also helps reduce the bacteria count in the mouth. So, go ahead and chew that piece of sugar-free gum!

Sealants

Sealants have gotten some bad press lately with a link to BPA. BPA or Bisphenol , is a chemical in some plastics. Human and animal studies have linked BPA to an estrogen-like chemical that can increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease in adults. Minute BPA levels rise in the saliva in the first three hours after sealants placement and then quickly drop off. The benefits of sealants outweigh the potential risk of BPA exposure. Dental materials cause far less BPA exposure than normal, daily used consumer products such as plastic bottles and the linings of metal cans.

Sealants are thin plastic coverings placed in the grooves of the posterior chewing teeth or molars. Sealants prevent decay on the chewing surfaces by covering the narrow cracks and crevices referred to in dentistry as "pits and fissures". This lessens the hiding places for the bacteria that cause cavities or dental caries and allows the back teeth to be more cleansable.

The New Patient Experience!

Here at Suwanee Dental Care, we try to make your dental experience something to remember. We begin a new patient appointment by giving a tour of our office. It is very nice and comforting to see where you are going to be treated. This is also a great opportunity to ask questions about our practice and the doctors and staff. After the tour, the doctor and the dental assistant will meet in our consultation room with the patient to get to know more about them. The main dental concerns of the patient are also discussed at this time. This time spent with the patient seems to give them a sense of comfort to ease their mind before they actually sit in the dental chair. We try to make the patient as comfortable as we can, since most patients fear dental treatment. After meeting the doctor, we move to the dental operatory where we do a very thorough dental examination of the patient's teeth and oral health. The next appointment for the patient will be with our treatment coordinator to review the findings and go over a treatment proposal that had been prepared by the doctor. The patient is given the opportunity to decide which treatment they want to start with and when the best time to get scheduled. If you are looking for a dental home, why don't you give Suwanee Dental Care a call.

Skipping Mouth to Mouth Saves Lives

The Importance of Baby Teeth

The Importance of your Babies first set of Teeth

Don't think that it is not important to take care of your childs first set of teeth.Baby teeth have great importance to your baby's future. Not only do they help your child eat and speak they also keep space needed for permanent teeth to erupt into the arch correctly. Some think that if their child gets a cavity on a baby tooth or loses one due to decay prematurely that it's okay because they will have a new seat of teeth to replace them. Not only can cavities be painful for your child but losing a tooth premturely can significantly impact your childs bite relationship.A childs first set of teeth are there not only for chewing but also to keep space for permanent teeth to erupt.Teeth will start to shift if that baby tooth is lost to soon this can lead to alot of orthodontic treatment, TMJ joint pain and costly bills.Start your child early with dental check ups and good nutrition habits so that they can have a more healthy and pain free life.

Did you know a simple dental screening can save your life?

Dentists are now performing early detection tests for heart disease and several other serious illnesses. Recent studies show that patients with periodontal disease run the risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary artery bleeds and have a more difficult time controlling their diabetes, For women who are pregnant, they have increased risks of pre-term births and low birth-weight babies.

The bottom line ..... your dentist could save your life with a simple finger prick! People see their dentist more often than their medical doctor, so their dentist plays a major role in the early detection of some of these serious conditions.

The most common warning sign of more than twenty serious illnesses is bleeding gums. Some of these conditions include; pre-diabetes, diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth, you need to ask us about this simple C-Reactive Protein test at your next dental visit.

Single Tooth Replacements

Implants are tooth replacements that mimic nature. The premier choice for replacing a missing tooth may be a dental implant. Teeth may be lost for a number of reasons, including cavities, periodontal disease or trauma. Did you know that by age 17, more than 7.3% of US children have lost one permanent tooth; and by age 50, Americans have lost an average of 12 teeth?

Compared to other treatment options to replace missing teeth, such as bridges and removable partials, an implant with an implant crown offers a long-lasting solution for a missing tooth and requires fewer follow-up dental visits.

Did you know that oral health is a major factor of general health? Replacing your missing tooth with a dental implant and crown should allow you to live your life as if you never suffered from a missing tooth. When your treatment is complete, you should be able to chew, speak, and socialize without experiencing the negative emotions that having a missing tooth can sometimes cause.

A dental implant and crown will help minimize the amount of bone that will be lost in the area of the missing tooth. Preserving oral bone may help maintain your remaining natural teeth and natural facial contours. Replacing your missing tooth may reduce the risk of having poor nutritional habits often found in those who do not replace missing teeth.

Only your dentist can be sure if you are a candidate for a dental implant, but most patients can be treated with dental implants. Schedule an appointment to talk to our dentists about how implants might benefit you.

OraVerse

Numbness can be limiting, affecting your speech, your smile, and your ability to drink. You may even catch yourself drooling.

The solution...

OraVerse® is a breakthrough that reverses unwanted lingering numbness after routine dental procedures where local anesthetic was used. On average, people who are given OraVerse not only return to normal sensation twice as fast, but they can smile, speak, and drink normally sooner, and drooling is minimized. OraVerse is administered by your dental professional in the same way the local anesthetic was given so that you can return to normal sensation and function faster.

OraVerse is not recommended for use in children less than 6 years of age or weighing less than 33 lbs.

If you'd like to have OraVerse as part of your next visit, just ask your dental professional for more details.

Guidance on Fluoride Intake for Infants and Young Children

Do you know how much flouride your child is getting? The ADA recommends that children under 2 should not receive a greater than optimal amount of fluoride. Fluoride intake above optimal amounts can create a risk for enamel fluorosis in teeth during their development before eruption through the gums. It is thought that babies who are bottle fed with water based formulas may be recieving more than what is recommended. To ensure that your child is not at risk for fluorosis, mothers should use water that is fluoride free or contains low levels of fluoride. Examples are water that is labeled purified, demineralized, deionized, distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water. Many grocery stores sell these types of drinking water for less than $1 per gallon. If you have any questions about your child's flouride intake, call our office today.

Xylitol ~ the sweetest thing

Wouldn't it be great if there was a product that dentists could recommend that was both sweet and delicious and also prevents tooth decay and helps to improve a patient's overall health as well? There is a product available that occurs naturally and is safe for people to consume: Xylitol

Xylitol has been around a long time. Xylitol is a five-carbon sugar alcohol derived primarily from forest and agricultural materials, particularly birch and other hardwood treese. It is also found in fruit (yellow plums), berries (strawberries and raspberries), vegetables (endive), and fungi (mushrooms). Xylitol is also produced in the human liver, which explains why it's safe for humans to consume.

So what does Xylitol actually do? In the oral cavity, table sugar reduces, creating an acidic, caries-promoting pH. Xylitol does not reduce in the mouth like table sugar; therefore it does not create acid. Microorganisms do not readily metabolize Xylitol, and its consumption has minimal effect on plaque pH. However, Xylitol does accumulate in bacteria. This accumulation inhibits the bacteria's growth. In short, consuming Xylitol stops the cavity-causing bacteria from growing and significantly reduces the risk of cavity formation.

Not only is Xylitol free from cavity causing acids, it can help prevent cavities when used as an alternative to sugar. Many people are pleasantly surprised to hear this news, especially dentists, who are recommending Xylitol to their patients, particularly those who are at high risk for decay.

Of course, it's not enough for dentists to encourage their patients to consume products containing Xylitol - they need to know how much to recommend. A common consensus seems to be between six and ten grams of Xylitol (or three to five servings).

Cavities can hide in your teeth.
Locating hidden decay before it destroys tooth structure is a major goal for modern dentistry. The widespread use of fluoride supplements in dental materials, toothpastes and drinking water has made surfaces harder and more resistant to decay. However, diagnosing cavities beneath the hard surfaces is more challenging because the disease process can start through microscopic defects in the hard surface enamel and can readily spread into the softer tooth structure beneath the surface.
X-rays and probing with an explorer are limited in detecting sub surface decay, particularly when the cavity is in its early stages.Fortunately, the new DIAGNODENT is a major breakthrough that allows the dentist and hygienist to locate hidden decay, and with treatment stop the spread of disease before it destroys the tooth from within.

Oral HPV and Oral Cancer : Are you at Risk?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common virus groups in the world. There are many different types of HPV, and the health risk varies depending upon the type of virus. While some types of HPV are low-risk and may cause skin lesions such as warts, there are other HPV types that are classified as high-risk. These high-risk HPV types may cause an HPV infection that may lead to cancer. For example, medical research shows that these same high-risk tyes are linked to approximately 90% of cervical cancers. Similarly, recent studies show that these same high-risk types cause cancers of the mouth, tongue, tonsils and throat areas. Along with excessive smoking and alcohol consumption, specific types of oral HPV are now considered to be a separate and serious risk factor for developing cancer in the head and neck region.

HPV transmission of the most common types can be quite simple. With just close contact between people, the infection can be spread. These types of HPV are considered to be low-risk. However, the more serious types pf HPV (high-risk group) that may lead to cervical cancer or oral cancer are known to be sexually transmitted. Both males and females are at risk when intimate contact is made with HPV-infected individuals. Individuals at greatest risk are those that are in intimate relationships with HPV-infected partners.

Early oral HPV infections do not typically cause any clinical signs or symptoms; thus a visual exam would not detect people that may already have an infection caused by HPV. Today, however, a simple test called OraRisk HPV is available from your dental professional who can perform this test as part of your routine oral exam. You will be asked to "swish and gargle" a sterile saline solution for 30 seconds. You will then empty the saline from your mouth into a small coded container that will be sent to OralDNA Labs for processing. The results will be sent to your dentist and they will contact you to discuss them.

There is more to a dental checkup than a routine cleaning

Research shows a link between gum disease and your overall health. Studies indicate periodontal (gum) disease may increase your risk for a variety of health concerns:
*Diabetes
*Cardiovascular Disease
*Stroke
*Respiratory Diseases
*Pre-term and low birth weight babies

Periodontal disease is caused by a bacterial infection and your body's response to that infection. Other factors that put you at risk include:

*Family History
*Medications
*Person to person transmission
*Smoking
*Clenching/grinding
*Stress
*Poor Oral Hygiene
* Diabetes
*Hormones

Good oral health and good overall health go hand-in-hand according to the Surgeon General. It is vital that you care for your gums on a daily basis and see your dental professional regularly.

VELscope ~ the oral cancer screening system

Oral cancer is one of the few types of cancer that haven't experienced a significantly reduced mortality rate in the past 30 years. In fact, the number of North Americans developing oral cancer is three times the number who develop cervical cancer. Sadly, one North American dies of oral cancer every hour of every day.

The problem: Oral cancer is discovered in late stages about 70% of the time, and often that is simply too late.

Oral cancer has traditionally been associated with tobacco usage and it's true that the majority of oral cancer victims smoke or use chewing tobacco, consume alcohol and are over 40. But the group experiencing the highest growth rate of oral cancer incidence does not fit this traditional "at risk" profile. More and more, oral cancer is striking younger people who don't use tobacco or abuse alcohol.

In many cases, the cause appears to be one of two strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV-16 or HPV-18) that can be contracted during sexual intercourse and especially oral sex.

As a result, health care experts recommend annual oral cancer screenings for all adults ages 18 and older. If you smoke or use tobacco, screenings are recommended every six months.

Our practice has purchased a state-of-the-art device called the VELscope oral cancer screening system. We can use this device to literally see beneath the surface to detect potentially dangerous growths we might have otherwise missed.

In most cases, the VELscope exam will reveal nothing of concern and take only a few minutes as part of a regular hygiene check-up. It involves no pain and is completely safe. We think you will find this additional cost for this exam to be very reasonable, and it might be that the cost will be covered by your insurance.

We think that you'll appreciate the peace-of-mind this screening can provide.
