Excess Occlusal Forces ~ T-Scan

All known public research on articulating paper consistently shows that articulating paper marks do not predictably measure the force or time-sequence of occlusal contacts accurately. Today we need a diagnostic device that can realiably determine occlusal force concentrations and contact time prematurities.

The T-Scan system is the only diagnostic device on the market that measures occlusal contact force and occlusal contact sequence. Objective data sets T-Scan apart from traditional occlusal indicators. The invaluable information it provides helps to easily diagnose and assess the balance of a patient's bite. The T-Scan illustrates the forces from first contact through closure, allowing the dentist to prevent general occlusal problems such as pain, gum disease, broken restorations, tooth loss, headaches and TMJ disorder.

The T-Scan system was recently selected by the Pride Institute for the "Best of Class" technology award in the diagnostic category. The T-Scan has proven to be so useful and accurate that many of the leading dental institutes are incorporating the system into their curriculum.

Milk and Weight Loss

The high levels of Calcium and Vitamin D found in milk may help people who are dieting lose more weight. More than 300 participants were examined who were overweight or at risk of becoming overweight over a period of 2 years. The study results showed that after adjusting for age, gender, Body Mass Index, and total fat intake, participants with higher intake of milk-based calcium and serum vitamin D (about 12 oz per day) experienced greater weight loss than those who consumed a half-glass of milk per day. However, the role of dairy products in weight loss is not well understood and more research is needed.

Estimates of Periodontal Disease Under-Reported

Differences between the types of testing used to detect periodontal diseases in the United States may have caused an under-reporting of the diseases' prevalence by as much as 50% of actual figures. Partial-mouth periodontal examinations have been used to establish previous estimates. A new study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, shifted testing methods to a full-mouth comprehensive periodontal examination, to determine prevalence rates.

An epidemiologist at the CDC says the inaccuracy created by previous testing has "signifcant" implications for public health. In light of these findings, understanding the relationships between periodontal disease and other systemic diseases in the adult US population is more crucial than ever.

This new study demonstrates that the scope of periodontal diseases is significantly larger than what had been previously reported. Citing the relationship between periodontal diseases and systemic health, the prevalence of periodontal disease among Americans carries great implications for overall health of individuals, and is therefore a significant public health problem. An annual comprehensive periodontal evaluation should be a part of the preventive measures used to maintain oral health.
